Redundancy

Whenever I write a song, I fight with the little voice in my head that says “Someone’s already wrote about that.” “Oh, you are writing a song about loving life or heart break, Taylor Swift just released one on that.” The funny fact about it all is the fact that absolutely nothing under the sun is new. Every experience I experience, someone else has felt it in some way or another. Diverging the conversation for a minute as it pertains to redundancy, I must ask, how many pizza joints do we really need in this world? How many companies are so intrigued with the taste of water, that they sell and package various kinds and brands in the grocery store? Comparison paired with the fear that you are irrelevant and have nothing say, give or write about is ridiculous and also redundant. The same negative voice that seeks to silence you and your creativity is the same one that whispers in the ears of so many other people. No one can come up with a chord progression like you. No one can hit a high or low note with a distinct frequency like you. No one can write, teach, empathize, or formulate words to tell the story of your life and experiences like you. There will always be someone more talented and seasoned than you. I am humbled and sit with that reality and truth everyday. We as people did not create ourselves nor give ourselves certain skillsets or abilities—while there are many talents and crafts we can learn, most are innate--God given. You were created with a purpose, a voice, a presence, a gifting, so be bold, sing, write, and create. You were born to do this. You were made to fly.
